Solid reference; but, the information is locked into a very difficult-to-navigate ebook format. Also, if you have more than one ereader device - the license has a limited number of devices that you can have active at the same time.

easy to use reference

Superb, easy to use reference ..... as long as you have a clue what you're looking at you can confirm your diagnosis, order tests and treatments all on two pages - I love it. It is too big to carry around however and textbooks often do not work too well on kindle, as long as you realize it is a desk-sized reference you will like it.

Kindle version for real-time use is worthless

In general a great book. However, the Kindle version on your phone is essentially worthless. The spacing is bad, which makes it cumbersome. More importantly, the search engine is terrible. It very slowly pulls up all references to what you are looking for. Enter "ITP" and you get a hundred references, almost all of which are in some random differential diagnosis. Finding the actual ITP entry is very difficult. Obviously this makes it useless when trying to use on the go in an ED.

easy to carry

The book is about the size of a toy instruction manual and as thick as 2 dvd cases, so it's fairly small sized, easy to carry. The book itself has very little marks, so it's in really good conditions for being a rental book. It's exactly the book my Argumentation and Debate class was requiring.

This book is dry as toast. I read it for an argumentation and persuasion class at city college. It's bearable, but I wouldn't read it for fun. It does offer tools on how to step your game up for argumentation/persuasion... But I don't think the book is applicable outside of academia (personal opinion).

Good Young Heroes On an Edgy Adventure

I'm an elementary school librarian who knows what kind of reads will spur kids on to more reading. What I like about the Fated Saga is that the young protagonists have the weight of important choices to make and must risk their safety to do the right thing. Their adventure begins with questions about their family's past and takes them on a journey into exciting challenges. What I like is that the protagonists are the kind you want your children to admire and young readers will become wrapped up in the well written narrative, likely transporting themselves from a boring summer day to the life and death adventures of these good heroes.

Fated Saga

I loved the Fated Saga by Rachele D'Aigle. They are great for adults as well as children. I gave the first 3 to my granddaughter to read and purchaased the first 2 on my Kindle so that I could reread them just before the fourth book is published. I will purchase the 3rd book for my Kindle as soon as it is available.
I have told many people about this new series. This is a new alternative if you loved Harry Potter, you will enjoy these books.

Amazing way to improve cardiac function

I'm not sure why Amazon is carrying this book since it is geared more for the medical community. I am a retired Critical Care RN and I found some of the info to be over my head in spite of my training and education post graduation. That said, I have to say it is one of the most valuable books I've ever read. My husband has non-ischemic cardiomyopathy secondary to a viral infection. He's had some medical issues recently after a 7 yr benign course. All of his MDs have been amazed by his ability to carry on with his daily activities such as building a room on the house, bush-hogging acreage with his 40 HP tractor, taking care of 2 homes and a pecan orchard. He's never needed supplemental oxygen despite an ejection fraction of 20-25. I decided to have a look at what this doctor had to say. Most drugs given for this problem relate to the muscle function as a whole, not to the cellular function of the muscle tissue. This book addresses the cellular function. Those of you who took biology may remember the Krebs cycle as well as ATP and mitochondrial function. That's what this is all about.
Bottom line is that Dr Sinatra recommends 4 supplements to improve cardiac health: CoEnzyme Q10, l-carnitine, magnesium and d-ribose. My husband had been on CoQ10 since 1991 for oral health (his dentist died. New dentist looked at old chart & thought he was looking at a different patient). He has also been taking magnesium for 15 yrs or so. Both of these contributed, I feel, to the fact that he functions at a higher level than would be expected for his ejection fraction (the % of blood pumped out thru the aorta from the left ventricle of the heart). Normal EF is 55-65%.
If you know someone who has difficulty functioning because of heart disease, this would be a good book to read and try the supplements. They are all over the counter and do not react with any prescription meds that I have been able to discover. I mentioned this book to one of my husband's MDs (nephrologist) and he wrote down the name of it and asked the nurse to order a copy for the office. There are many references in the book to various studies and the journals they were reported in. I checked some of them and all were exactly as quoted. I bought the Kindle version because it was cheaper but plan on getting a hard copy for other members of my family to read since I'm NOT loaning out my much loved Kindle!

UPDATE 4/22/16: I just found out from the nephrologist's office RN, a friend of mine, that he really did buy the book; read it and is now recommending the 4 supplements to all his pts who have cardiac disease. Since then I have purchased a complete set of the nutrients and had them sent to a close friend who also has cardiomyopathy from an MI. I will continue to make sure both hubby & friend stay on this combo as long as they are alive. Can't wait to see what Dec. scheduled ECHO will show on hubby.

UPDATE 12/31/2016: Just got back from Houston where hubby had another ECHO done. Reading by same MD as in Feb 2016 shows an increase of his Ejection Fraction to 30%. Prior ECHOs had all been about the same as listed above. This is the first improvement since 2009 when he was diagnosed. The only real change was the addition of the 4 nutrients. All the rest of his meds have been maintenance for many years. All I can say is that after 52 yrs of marriage, I'm not letting him get out of this marriage if I can help it! LOL

How come my " honored " Cardiologist back home in Nags Head, NC didn't tell me about this!

This is of utmost importance. At last I know how to help support the energy in the cells of my heart. Pretty useful, wouldn't you say? My wonderful Doctor, Robert McClean of New Port News, VA, let me read this book during a Chelation Treatment in his office, that cleans out my arteries. Wow! Why hadn't my honored Cardiologist back home in Nags Head,NC, tell me about this paradigm shift? I immediately ordered this book, Qunol Co Q-10, L-Carnitine, D-Ribose, and Full Spectrum Magnesium. Nattokinase was all ready part of my arsenal. As soon as these all arrived, I began a long needed journey back to feeling stronger. After 2 weeks, my Honey had to beg me to stop working, so that he could rest. I feel like I am starting to grow younger. A strange, but good feeling.

Book can be a lifesaver

A few years ago, I was hit with viral myocarditis which led to a case of dilated cardiomyopathy (a fancy name for congestive heart failure). As a former athlete in his fifties who had always stayed in pretty good shape, and who stayed quite active engaging in backpacking & other vigorous activities, I found this to be a particularly demoralizing situation. My ejection fraction was at 30%, and my cardiologist recommended a pacemaker if I could not rebound.

As someone with great familiarity with biochemistry and physiology (a degree in microbiology), I went to work researching my situation. I was not an expert on cardiac cells, but my research found results in that the cardiac tissue in cases like mine were starving for some of the building blocks of a cellular process known as oxidative phosphorylation. The 3 ingredients that seemed to be most needed were coenzyme Q, L-carnitine, and ribose, along with magnesium (a mineral essential for many different enzymes & coenzymes involved in energy metabolism). I immediately began taking dietary supplements involving the aforementioned ingredients.

About this time I heard of Sinatra's book about metabolic cardiology. (At the time it was not as well known as it is now). I purchased the book and studied it voraciously. I found that he had written a very informative book on the role of these supplements in the metabolism of the heart, and explained clearly why a heart that was in a state of dilative cardiomyopathy would need dietary supplementation. It was written in a style that a layman would be able to understand, but he gave the biochemistry and physiology background well enough to satisfy those at a higher level of understanding (like those with a scientific degree such as myself).

One of the points he made in his book was how the medical establishment pooh poohed the concept of dietary supplementation to help those with congestive heart failure. Yet the proof was in the pudding- his patients who took the supplements seemed to do better and had better survival rates than those who did not. I can back him up on his claim. My cardiologist never once mentioned any kind of dietary supplementation to me- he was strictly drugs & surgery (pacemaker).

Well, I must say, I was not cured overnight, but over a period of a couple of years, I made a full (and I mean full) recovery and I remain healthy to this day. My ejection fraction is normal, and I have no restrictions on exercising or activity. I could tell my cardiologist was quite amazed at how everything turned out. But he didn't realize I had another cardiologist in my corner- Steven Sinatra. If you or a loved one are having heart problems, read this book and follow it's recommendations. I still take the supplements he recommended to this day. And he may have very well saved my life. God bless Dr. Sinatra.

About the Author
My career in ELT began in Oxford in 1987, first as a teacher, then DoS, then Vice principal of Godmer House School of English. In 1996, I set up my own school teaching English to professionals which I ran for 10 years, giving it up in 2006 to concentrate on writing full-time. My interests have always centred around needs-based learning: from task-based learning for general English students through business English teaching to specialised ESP courses. As a teacher and a writer, my aim is to develop materials that are meaningful and thought-provoking - that offer more than just language learning. I seek out projects that offer this possibility. This was what led me to work with National Geographic on the adult series, LIFE. My publications include: Success with BEC (Summertown 2008), Energy English (Cengage 2010) and LIFE (National Geographic Learning (2012). I live in Oxford with my wife (and children when they come home). I love exercise (tennis, yoga, swimming, cycling and walking), reading and travel and I like to combine all three as often as I can.

John Hughes has worked in ELT for twenty years as a teacher, teacher trainer and director of studies. Currently, he runs training courses, both face-to-face and online. He is also an author with over 20 ELT books. His books for Cengage Learning and National Geographic Learning include Spotlight on FCE, Practical Grammar, Total Business and the new six-level National Geographic course for adult learners called Life.

Helen Stephenson first taught business English in the 1980s. She has written in-house training courses and a course for upper-secondary students. She teaches at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.

Going to France to enjoy yourself? You need this book!

When I first moved to Paris, I could barely speak a word of French (and had no job, and nowhere to stay, but that's another story), apart from a heavily-accented "une baguette de pain s'il vous plait Madame". And I can honestly say that this book was THE most useful thing I read -- indeed, it's the only book I pored over and learnt sections of by heart. Yes, speaking proper sentences and being polite and all that is all very useful, but if you really want to enjoy yourself, and get on with the locals, then this is the motherlode. Even if you only know two words of French, slipping a few well-chosen words like "bagnole", "boulot", and "flingue" (and the choicer swear words) into your conversation will break the ice, and impress your hosts, a LOT more than knowing the subjective pluperfect ever could. I eventually took "proper" French lessons at the Sorbonne, and had many arguments with my teacher about the relative merits of "correct" and "colloquial" French. For me, learning a language is about communicating, not about grammar, and this is the perfect place to start. To this day, I make sure that none of my friends or colleagues goes off to France for any period of time without a copy of this under their arm...

Un truc d' ouf!

Despite some serious misgivings about perhaps in some way contributing to the sin of French slang spoken with an American accent, I must nevertheless praise Genevieve for her entertaining "p'tit bouquin." From my close contact with the Frenchies I've noticed that two ways to make an impression are: (1) achieve a perfect French accent, and (2) (easier) learn some slang. Even people fluent in school-taught French, who have read Moliere, Balzac and Proust in the original, cannot and will not understand much in French Films, TV etc. without a basic knowledge of French slang. It is much more present than in American English or in German. From the few books on this topic that I've come across, Genevieve's remains the best. She covers all the basics and throws in some witty remarks on French culture as well. Of course, one must first have a good background in French in order to eventually use the expressions here, especially since phonetic pronuciations are not given; without a certain level of proficiency one runs the risk of sounding like a foreign fool. But this book is also good precisely for figuring out when you've been called a fool (or something worse!) For those interested in expressions past the essentials, check out her other book: Merde Encore.

This book is an excellent source of words and expressions, of varying degrees of vulgarity, that are used all the time by french speakers. I used it often during the first of my two years in France. Its real value is not for those in French 101 but for those who already speak decent french and want to learn the expressions used every day by the young and some of the french media (magazines, movies etc). Translated literally many of these words might seem offensive (e.g., connard, encule, putain), yet as the book points out, many times these are the phrases you hear the most in the metro or cafes of France. It is important to realize that even though these words do not carry the same force as their English translations, one must still pay attention to the social context in order to aviod disrespectful "faux pas"!
