My Favorite Echocardiology Textbook.

Of all my Echocardiology textbooks, this one is my favorite. Over the years, I have collected MANY Echocardiology textbooks (numerous Otto, Feigenbaum, Solomon, Braunwald, Oh, Reynolds, etc); I could open my own library. This textbook is truly comprehensive!

It's as if ASE, has compiled every article written on every echo subject and compiled it into a textbook format. Unlike the ASE journal articles, a lot of the superfluous language has been omitted. The text is direct and includes many pictures and diagrams as reference. Subjects are easily referenced. Some subjects that are not usually covered, like pregnancy, endocrine disease, SLE, athlete's, HIV, etc., are covered in detail with values and best practice information. Of course, the typical subjects are also included (Diastolic dysfunction, valvular disease, etc). Best of all, my lab considers the ASE values the gold standard, so I can directly reference values in the textbook during a discussion.

I could sell all the other textbooks and be perfectly happy keeping this book and Reynold's pocket reference.

There should be a quick reference table for normal values. The book has plenty of information, but why not have appendices to show normal values?
I've reached for this a few times for quick reference and it has failed me. It may be comprehensive but not really a user friendly text.

Outstanding review on echocardiography in a modular fashion. Very concise and well delineated. Not as extensive on some subjects as other echo texts but this serves as a quick reference guide on many different topics, and has a stronger emphasis on the ASE guidelines since it is endorsed by them. I would recommend this as either a primary or secondary text for fellows or faculty.

about 14 years ago while walking along the street near my residence in San Francisco,I passed a trash can at a street corner.next to the trash can was a box of "junk".I NEVER bother picking anything up from the street except money.but I had a strange urge to investigate the box.inside was this book.I took it it home and and it sat on my bookshelf for 5 years without being touched.then I finally decided to read it.my mother and I used to make astrological charts for people so I found numerology quite interesting.this book takes you through different forms of numerology as well as explaining it's processes and functions.it has a quasi religious connection going on.and amazingly it is the most accurate look into the past,present and future anyone can imagine.I'm not lobbying for anyone to start practicing this form of mysticism (alot of people may have religious restrictions about just the reading of the book)however,if you are already into this sort of practice then your reference section of your library is incomplete without this book.

Kevin Quinn Avery was my teacher in 1975. He was great! He practiced what he preached. This is a man who studied in Tibet, and the knowledge he brought back is written in Numbers of Life. When I studied with him, I reviewed my life according to the book, and it is right on target. Do yourself a favor, and buy this book.

Probably the best interpretion of Numerology

I too bought this book in 1977, when I had also started in Astrology. In 1986, I too lent this book to someone...and it dissappeared forever. I felt like my eyes had been gouged out, and I have been searching for it, for YEARS!. This book is so incredibly accurate that is is scary. All the astrology charts that I use to do, I always augmented with Avery's Numerology charts. The path that Quinn's Numerolgy and the transits and progessions in an astrology chart, dove tail so perfectly that after I lost this book, I was not satified with the charts that I did. I felt the interptation was incomplete. I have studied many different interpetations of Numerology, but Numbers of Life, is by far, the truest. This book is a find!

About the Author
Lee Epstein is Ethan A.H. Shepley Distinguished University Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. She is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. A recipient of 12 grants from the National Science Foundation for her work on law and legal institutions, Epstein has authored or co-authored over 100 articles and essays, as well as 15 books, including The Choices Justices Make (co-authored with Jack Knight), which won the Pritchett Award for the Best Book on Law and Courts and the Lasting Contribution Award for making a "lasting impression on the field of law and courts." The Constitutional Law for a Changing America series (co-authored with Thomas G. Walker) received the Teaching and Mentoring Award from the Law and Courts Section of the American Political Science Association. Her most recent books are The Behavior of Federal Judges, with William M. Landes and Richard A. Posner, and An Introduction to Empirical Legal Research, with Andrew D. Martin. Thomas G. Walker is the Goodrich C. White Professor of Political Science at Emory University, where he teaches courses in constitutional law and the judicial process. Far from "everything"

On November 20, 2012 on Twitter Mark Minervini responded to some guy aksing what does he share in his book. Mark's reply was: "I threw everything but the kitchen sink in it."

I've followed Minervini very closely for about 3 years on Twitter and his blog. I've read virtually everything that has been ever published about him. I analyzed his trades and market calls that he published on Twitter and in interviews. And I can assure you that he did not share "everything" with us in his book.

I won't discuss book contents into details as many other reviewers have done so. The most important part that is missing are the exact buy and sell points. Minervini spend a lot of time discussing how to find a stock to buy, fundamentally and technically. All credits to Mark for that. These chapters are as complete as they can be. But every trader that has been around for some time knows very well that the difficult part is not how to find a stock. After a year or two of studying markets we all become a pretty good stock pickers. The difficult part is how to enter a trade at exactly the right time and when exactly to sell it, not to let profits evaporate and at the same time not to sell to soon. There is not a single one intraday chart in the whole book. I strongly doubt that Mark buys off daily charts as you would probably conclude. Selling techniques described are scarce. Besides, I'd like to read much more about specific money management techinques that he uses. Also, Mark is known to emphasize the importance of determining market direction. Way, way, way too little said about that in the book.

In short, I think this book is more of a marketing attempt to promote himself and his paid service. That's why it is so cheap. I expected a price at least ten times higher, but now I see why he made it accessible for anyone. Novices will probably get excited (they buy stock picking services), but experienced traders will know that some major parts are missing. Book is full of stories, anecdotes and metaphores and very fun to read, but please don't expect that you will make any money by using exactly the method described in the book. Or rather try and you will soon realize that the real secrets to Mark's success were still kept secretes.

And one final note. We should probably disregard Mark's 1995 to 2000 performance. I think it is completely irrelevant for current market conditions. I would very much like to see his performance after internet bubble. The same applies for all other market wizards like Gil Morales, Chris Cacher, Dan Zanger and others who got rich (and famous) during the internet bubble era.

In stock market, there is a season for every trading methodology

I have been trading for a long time. I am always wondering how come all the trading books in Amazon can get glowing reviews. Did every author call up their buddies and let them pump up the book?

Mr. Minervini's canslim variety worked in 1999. After that, the market changed significantly. Sure, 2003 bull market and 2007 bull market worked with his methodology, if you caught those true market leaders, but it is far far far from effective like it used to be.

O'Neil boys, like david Ryan, Mark Minervini, and later ones like Gil Morales have performed much less stellar now than their 1999 period. Those returns are just some past glory. For one, Gil Morales had 18000% compounding returns in the raging bull market of 1995-99, but in raging bull market of 2009 had a 72% draw down. The answer? the market has changed.

If you are REALLY honest and you REALLY want to figure out what is going on, read the original Market Wizard interview of Minervini, and you will find out that during that interview, Minervini DID NOT want to tell any details about his methodology, and he tried hard to HIDE the way how he trade, and he even forced the author to turn off the tape recorder before he explained his methodology. Read it, his behavior during the interview was clearly documented.

You do not need to be a genius to know that the one who knows how to make money will NEVER tell his methodology to invite competition. That is exactly what Minervini did at that time. But now, don't to think it is funny and strange that Minervini suddenly become so "generous" and wants to share his methodology to "help" you make money?

Another thing that so many people failed to mention in their glowing review of this book, is trend following and canslim methodology require you to have a type of psychology that "knows" how to sit, and how to avoid shakeout, and if you get shakeout how to buy back... Minvervini failed to mention those things on how to handle a true market winner in his book (he did talked a little about buyback after initial shakeout, but not how to handle violent shakeout during stock's upward zoom), but those are the key things to make big money.

Believe me, how to handling a winning stock right is far more critical than how to buy the stock. That is exactly how Minervini made his money, but how come such a generous person rarely mention those things in his book?

Trading methodology is never the key to trading success. Your tradng psychology and portfolio management are far more important. Even if the trading methodology is great, you have to know if the methodology match your personal psychology make up. Unfortunately, Minervini seldom mention those things in his book, either.

Must read book

This is a great book. It is an absolute steal for $13. I would pay ten times that amount for this book. Minervini's system is very similar to CANSLIM. Minervini spends the first part of his book discussing some misconceptions that many investors believe such as overvaluing the importance of PE and buying stocks because they appear cheap. In the next section he discusses the fundamental traits of big winners, such as the need for EPS and sales growth. Chapters 9 and 10 are an absolute gold mine. In chapter 9, Mark discusses how to find market leaders and in chapter 10 he discusses pivot points and how to enter the stock at the right time. If you've read How to make money in stocks, you will recognize the cup and handle and Flag patterns. However, Mark spends time on discussing how to know if the cup and handle is valid and reliable. In addition, he also discusses the 3C cup cheat which is a way to enter a cup and handle pattern prior to the traditional Oneil pivot point. Moreover, I really liked that Mark spent time discuss what to do if a breakout fails and how to know if a stock is acting healthy (he calls it a tennis ball) or poorly (an egg) after the breakout. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed reading How to make money in stocks. I found it to be the perfect addition to Oneil's book. This is truly a classic, I would put it up with Stan Weinstein's book, Reminisces of a Stock Operator, Darvas' book, the Market Wizards, and of course How to Make Money in Stocks. I actually got this book at 3pm yesterday. A day later, I'm already up to page 257. This is a must read for any stock market junkie.

This book is probably too honest for it's own good. Sarcasm is abound making you wonder if it's really an area you want to visit or not. Apparently driving is terrible, cars are regularly broken into, get secure parking if you do get a car (although there isn't any), don't drive on the Amalfi coast road or a bus will hit you, nightlife in Positano is non-existent, and you can smell the drains...

If your intention is to learn anything about the Amalfi coast, that region receives coverage on only 35 of the 289 pages. Praiano for example gets around a page and a half of coverage.

Grade 1-4-Anderson turns a little-known historical tidbit into a fresh, funny, and inspirational alternative to the standard Thanksgiving stories. Alarmed that the observance was dying out since many states did not observe it at all and those that did had no agreement as to date, Sarah Hale began 38 years of letter writing in support of making it a national holiday. Ignored or refused by administration after administration, she persisted until at last, President Lincoln, possibly persuaded by her argument that it would help to reunite the union, declared the fourth Thursday in November as a national holiday in 1863. The writing sparkles and is well matched by the spirited and irreverent caricatures (including Native people and pilgrims with feathers in their headbands and hats). Lively and provocative sentences involve readers. Anderson doesn't state the facts; she reveals them, unveils them, and celebrates them, and her text certainly shows that persistence and eloquence can succeed. Faulkner takes every opportunity to provide visual humor. He draws Sarah and other ladies storming the doors of the state house with a giant quill pen as a battering ram. His busts of recalcitrant presidents and his graphic depiction of the "other things" President Buchanan had "on his mind" convey complex historical concepts while adding to the humorous tone of the book. A "Feast of Facts" gives more information on Thanksgiving, Hale, and the year 1863, and ends with the exhortation: "Pick up your pen. Change the world."-Louise L. Sherman, formerly at Anna C. K-Gr. 3. Sarah Hale was a magazine editor, mother, teacher, and feminist (though not a suffragette). She also "saved" Thanksgiving by imploring President Lincoln to declare it a national holiday. Appalled that Thanksgiving, a holiday that could bring people together, was being ignored by many Americans, she had appealed to several previous presidents--Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan--but only Lincoln responded. In 1863, Sarah saw Lincoln declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. Anderson gives an inherently interesting story an extra boost with a terse, amusing text ("never underestimate dainty little ladies"), but it is Faulkner's art, reminiscent of David Small's work in So You Want to Be President (2000), that stands out. The pictures are droll and funny, often going beyond the bounds of the text to make an ironic point. The back matter is particularly solid for a picture book; there's additional information about Hale and about Thanksgiving as well as a brief overview of the Civil War and of slavery. One of the best books to read to little kids.

This is my first Amazon Review. I usually can't get my lazy self to write a review even when for an excellent high quality work such as this one.

But this book is so exceptionally well done that not only did it motivate me to write a review, it motivated me to buy some copies of it so I could give it to my kid's school and their cousins. The book's writer (and illustrator) go to great lengths to make it entertaining and very informative.

I think the really good reviewers have already written good reviews of this book, so let me just give a quick list of "Pros/Cons"

Pro:
----
* The message: The story is about a great American, hard work, and the ability of one persistent person to make a difference
* The humor: The humor of this book is not ugly or over the top, it is on two levels so it would make both parents and kids crack up. Humor is expressed both through text and the illustrations. This book is not a serious narration of facts.
* The organization: The book is really in two parts. The first section is the richly illustrated low-text exposition of what Sarah did. Then there is a detailed bio about Sarah and a little history about her time.
* Sensitivity: The book is written from a liberal perspective (in the non-political meaning of the phrase), it doesn't look down on Sarah (even when explaining that she wasn't your typical woman's rights advocate), it doesn't demonize the south, it doesn't whitewash the north. The illustrator draws depictions from every kind of American -- not just the white ones that I grew up seeing in my books about Thanksgiving when I was a child.
* Respect: Even though this book is short, it doesn't disrespect its readers, even the youngsters, by oversimplifying anything. The history lesson even clarifies how bad our country acted at times (explaining how the Navajo were treated during the civil war)

O.K. So this isn't really a major knock, but the hard cover book could be a little sturdier. It is fairly well bound but I felt the pages could be a little thicker so they would survive a class room for years.

FIVE STARS FOREVER for "Thank you, Sarah"

Yippie-Skippie for Laurie Halse Anderson, a descendant of Sarah Josepha Buell Hale! Laurie seems to be every bit as bold, brave, stubborn and smart as her main character, Sarah. This 2002 juvenile literature has loose Rockwell-like drawings in soft, harvest colors. Each page logically flows into the text with innocence and humor as Laurie tells of her 'heroine with pen' in a uniquely modern, conversational fashion that evokes the spirit of forging ahead into new frontiers. She makes it easy for children to grasp the idea of tackling and persevering a task to get it done right. In Sarah's case, quality took time, something our fast-paced children can't hear enough. It's an eventful book of fact, feelings and hard work that are so necessary for successful results. Boys will have an appreciation for Sarah's fortitude (not just in football season) and girls will be inspired to carry on the overseeing spirit of Sarah. Laurie really makes history a fun read! Thank you, Laurie! You are most kind to carry on the "get-to-it-to-get-it-done" attitude that obviously runs through your veins! The pen IS mightier than the sword.
