It was a really helpful tool for me. I don't speak Japanese or any other second langauge for that matter but didn't want to appear as the "Ugly American" who only speaks English and makes no attempts at the native tongue when abroad. In fact I will now use all of the lanuage dictionaries when taking a vacation, it can't hurt.

I know people like to say don't go for Romaji but seriously sometimes it just works. Although I know my hiragana and katakana well enough to read I find it hard to flip through a dictionary with ease if the entry words are written in hiragana/katakana. It takes me awhile to sort out anything beyond the secondary letters out. I find I spend too much time in reciting the alphabet in my head to get to the correct sections. Romaji is just faster, and for now it works so I use it as my primary dictionary method. In that regard this dictionary does a great job for a beginning dictionary. It's succinct and easy to handle. I supplement this with the Kodansha's Furigana dictionary and it works out really well as the Kodansha one gives me detail and dept and lets me practice my alphabet.

Vary nice but small floops

I got the hardcover addition, I love this book vary much! I wanted to see a bit more Japanese. But I'm happy regardless. It's all in Romaji and the Japanese that is in here is not hiragana it's a mix of katakana and kanji witch is nice for advanced students but I'm just learning hiragana. I got the hardcover book and it lookes half used. Their is a few scratches and the sticker took off some of the leather on the book. It's fine though no missing pages or anything. I like this book!

Edit: Definitely used. No one wrote in it or anything, just the pages are oldish, and the hardcover has scratches ect. I dont mind it, because its really minor. Its a great dictionary but I just thought I was buying it new. :)

The best J/E E/J I know of.

For the price, there's nothing better. Most of the Japanese/English dictionaries out there either have not nearly enough entries in them to be useful, or, their Japanese listings are written using Japanese alphabetical order (-KSTNHMYRWN). This can be maddening. Also, most of the dictionaries that are using Japanese alphabetical order also neglect to include definitions written in english letters. In other words, if you look up the word EGG, they will list as its equivalent "卵." They won't tell you how to say it (it's 'tamago' btw) . They also don't even bother to write it out in hiragana. They just show the Japanese character "卵." This dictionary, on the other hand, will show you the Kanji for words and then they also spell out the pronunciation of the words in Roman letters.

I have four of these dictionaries. I bought one, used it up, and then bought three more. I also bought a tube of very strong glue and glued my old one back together. I've been using it now for about 18 years. I can't praise the book highly enough.

What sparked your interest in professional reinvention?�
My interest in reinvention started because I've changed careers a number of times. I went to graduate school for theology, and then became a journalist, a presidential campaign spokesperson, a nonprofit executive director, and finally a marketing strategy consultant. I realized each time, you need to explain that transition in a way that makes sense to other people and demonstrates that you'll be able to do the job successfully. This book is a way to share what I've learned through my own experience, and through advising many talented professionals about rebranding themselves.

Why would people need to reinvent themselves professionally?�
There are a lot of reasons. These days, you can't count on a lifetime job with one company - or, in many cases, even a lifetime career. Too many industries are going through convulsive changes. The people who could benefit most from this book would be individuals looking to change their careers, people who want to move up in their company and know they need to shape how they're viewed by others, and folks who may have been laid off or are looking for a new job in their industry. I also think that younger job-seekers, who are at an earlier stage in personal brand-building, might find this helpful as they're starting out.�

What if I'm not really comfortable with the idea of 'personal branding'?
Some people are turned off by the implication that people can be 'branded' the way cereal or detergent is. They may feel branding equates to phoniness or inauthenticity. But that's exactly the opposite of how I view it. Personal branding isn't about packaging something in a fake way that results in a sale (or a job offer). Your reputation lasts for a long time, and needs to be treated with respect. You won't get very far if you try to be something you're not. Rather, your personal brand is about figuring out who you really are and what you do best, and then living that brand out. It's the essence of authenticity.�

You argue that it's essential for people to understand the unique talent or perspective they can bring. Why is that important?�
I like to say that you'll never win if you're playing someone else's game. When you're transitioning into a new company, new job, or new career, you may be judged by other people's standards. Your colleagues may have 20 years of experience, while you have three months. You're going to lose unless you find a way to show you have unique skills and expertise (perhaps because of your previous professional background) that they simply don't have - and explain why that's a valuable contribution.�

Dorie Clark is a marketing strategy consultant and frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Recognized as a branding expert by the Associated Press, Clark has worked with a diverse range of clients, including Google, the Ford Foundation, Yale University, the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the National Park Service.

A former presidential campaign spokeswoman, Clark is Adjunct Professor of Business Administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. She has taught marketing and communications at Tufts University, Suffolk University, Emerson College, and Smith College Executive Education and has guest lectured at universities including Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Michigan. Best book I've ever read on this topic.

This is a great book for everyone who realizes that the days of lifelong employment are long gone and for those who are interested in taking control of their career, in order to get a promotion, get a new job or to even switch career paths.

What I like is that this book isn't just focused on "personal branding." It's NOT about your personal elevator pitch, or working the room at the local business card exchange. Instead, the author provides a series of exercises to help you to understand things like:
- Your objectives
- Your competitive advantage
- Crafting your narrative
- Ways to demonstrate your value

Lots of fun reinvention stories, too, from everyday people and famous people alike.

Good, but not so applicable for normal people

It is a good book, but it seems to have been written for already successful people that are wanting to change career. The author presumes you already have a network of influent people, and that everybody is wanting to help you to get to your new objective. Besides that, you should meet your friends and ask them what are your own weaknesses. I don't know about you, but I have not such friends (at work), coleagues or boss who I can ask such a question.

If you're looking for practical tools to stand-out in the digital age, I'd highly recommend it.

Dorie is well-known for her expertise in marketing strategy. What I didn't realize was her passion for personal branding. It's an important topic, and one to which she's brings considerable professional and personal experience.

In this book, she offers practical tools to help ANYONE position themselves for success, helping others to understand who you are and the value you provide.

While offering deep wisdom on brand building strategies and tactics, the book remains very much accessible to lay people who don't have the time to dive full-in. Throughout the book, I found myself consistently thinking of friends who might benefit: a recently unemployed newspaper veteran, a church staffer transitioning to the non-profit world, a young professional looking to stand-out in her office, etc. Though comprehensive, it was surprisingly concrete and down to earth and gave lots of actionable advice.

If you're looking for practical tools to stand-out in the digital age, I'd highly recommend it.

For much of my life, I've been interested in natural healing through herbs and
other plants. As a biologist, I know the essentials of plant chemistry. But this
book has expanded my interest in rainforest healing formulas.

The author presents a good balance between today's standard medical approaches
and alternative healing modalities. I feel he does a good job in balancing various
ways to wellness. The personal stories he shares help to explain the science behind
the healing herbs. I found a lot of benefits in this book and am sure others will too.

About the Author

ROBERT NATIUK has written widely for TV, radio, magazines,
books and other media. His works often focus on spiritual and personal
growth and health issues.

A former school teacher in Canada's Yukon Territory, Robert has continued
teaching through his writing and storytelling. He has also been motivational
speaker and seminar leader and has collected hundreds of books and recordings
on "what's inside that shows up on the outside!"

To balance out this type of seriousness, he also continues to read and collect
modern and classical children's books and total-wellness books. His love of
education through storytelling and imagery permeates his writing. That's
why, even in "more serious writing," his books pop with humor,
imagination and a conversational style that's easy to read.

Robert and his family live in the Pacific Northwest. He and his wife Martha
love to travel, spend time with their family (now includes five grandkids and
one spoiled cat). Martha is an accomplished organist, choir director and
music teacher.

Though I have been a proponent of healthful living through the years, I realize that the "Renew" aspects Natiuk discusses in his book, had somehow been neglected. This book has made me realize I have some "Catch-up" work to do in relation to my own health; no one else can do this for me. I have always valued stories, and so I have appreciated reading the testimonies of people who have benefited from the Amazon Herbs, so at this point I feel it would be beneficial for me to further explore these herbs. Thanks so much for your information.

Fascinating book on Herbs

I love to use herbs of all types - so, I was delighted to find this new book by Robert Natiuk. The world of Amazon herbs and their uses is quite extraordinary - and endlessly fascinating for me now. The result of reading it is that I have learned so much that is new about herbs in general (and Amazon herbs in particular) - and I have now also got many new ideas on how to improve my physical and general health. You WANT to live AFTER PRO BALL - read this

I was a high school classmate with George. This story is far more than what he now has - he struggled to get to here and yes there were good times, but there were HARD days - during a recent class reunion he shared how he watched the OJ Simpson "well known" bronco chase and they were both having a bad day - but for him, what he thought that day (a contract denied), ultimately became a blessing when he turned and bought another franchise, setting it on course to now be the #2 or #3 in the country. George is real, honest and vulnerable in sharing with what God has given him. If youth today would listen and take to heart what he shares they to can learn. YES, sports END. Sadly in this generation the rap sheets are longer than the stat sheets but injury and age also don't allow long term life in the spotlight. Many blow the money or use drugs - they are broke when it all ends. They need a PLAN - read, listen and be willing to start low, be teachable and you will be rewarded. George is real and can give you real life help if you will listen.
