Very Concise

With almost 700 pages and an ominously black cover, the exterior of this book places it with so many other neuroscience texts: long, dull and confusing. But read on - there may be more to this book than meets the visual cortex... Concise Text of Neuroscience aims to provide the medical student with a relevant knowledge of the main topics in neuroscience. It achieves this in fifteen chapters, each one integrating the necessary neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with a related section on clinical neurology. The neuroanatomy is described with the aid of illustrations which, while only in one colour, are beautifully clear. Clinical sections include case histories which allow the reader to apply the acquired knowledge to a realistic situation. "Further application" questions and excellent summaries add to the quality of this book as a learning resource. Adding further to this are the appendices, covering neuroembryology, neurological examination, neurological imaging, and a simple-but-detailed MRI atlas. To me, however, the most important characteristic of any book attempting to cover such a complex subject is clarity of the writing style. In this area Concise Text excels. It explains difficult concepts in an understandable fashion, and amazingly retains its conciseness - the conciseness that allows the integration of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and clinical neurology into one textbook. As a medical student, you will be required to have a working knowledge of neuroscience. If you're looking for a book that teaches the essentials with good detail, but omits the useless facts, then this could be a useful one to have.

Robert E. Kingsley provided an excellent text that can be used for specific science research and class room teaching. It provides exceptionally good detail with wonderful graphic illustrations about the brain and about the spine. If not used for the current curriculum I recommend that it be required for extra broad research for technical papers. It will serve the practitioner and student in any level. At least get a used copy for reading and ready reference.

Good book but...

This is a good over-view of neuroscience. However the concise part sometimes gets in the way of the neuroscience part. I found it to be at a level of detail that made it unhelpful to me.

As a companion to an intro neuroscience course I think it would be helpful.

A shy, sensitive Jew who grew up in Fascist Italy, the author overcame anti-Semitic repression and her country's relative scientific immaturity, winning the 1986 Nobel Prize in medicine for her work on the nervous system. After Mussolini's racial laws stripped Levi-Montalcini of her academic post, she set up a small, clandestine laboratory in a Piedmont farmhouse where she carried out her fruitful research. Her firsthand account of her country's knuckling under to Hitler is calm and courageous. In 1946, she left Italy for St. Louis, and this earnest, talkative autobiography offers a detailed picture of the growth of modern experimental neurobiology. In 1963, Levi-Montalcini returned to Rome to live with her twin sister and continue her research. Mirroring her scientific credo that imperfection and unpredictability are the yeast of human evolution, her story unfolds a rich, unpredictable life.

An elegantly written recollection by an incredible woman.

This autobiography offers amazing insights not only into the thoughts and feelings of a truly delightful and perceptive woman but also an extrodinarily intimate record of the extreme struggle to survive and retain a sense of balance and optimism during the period of outrageous Nazi dominance across much of Europe.

Written in a delightfully graceful and elegant style that is almost totally absent today, Rita Levi-Montalcini's autobiograpghy takes one through the challenges of growing up in Torino during the period when women were not expected to want anything beyond getting married, raising a family and being the support system for their husbands. Add being a Jew in a primarily non-Jewish environment and one begins to appreciate the enormous hill Ms Levi-Montalcini climbed from her nursery in a warm and supporting household in 1908 to the wonder of being feted by both Swedish and scientific royalty in Stockholm in 1986. Never anything but disarmingly open and humble, the author shares all of her thoughts, feelings, desires, hopes and fears as she overcomes huge challenges and relentlessly pursues Mother Nature, finally getting her to relinquish a few fundamental secrets regarding our central nerve system.

Though a non-biologist, non-doctor, non-physiologist, I was nonetheless able to enjoy (though for sure not comprehend) the scientific details of her accomplishment. Fear not, her writting is sufficiently clear that even the most non-medical among us can fabricate a good mental image of her ground breaking yet simple research in sufficient detail to at least appreciate and enjoy, if not understand, her struggle and ultimate success in identifying the human Nerve Growth Factor.

A wonderful and inspiring autobiography. I remember looking for this book a year ago and it was around $200 -- so happy to find it for $13!

I'd love to get a copy to read this!

Ordered and paid $81.25 for a used copy from AmazonUK in Dec2012 after reading Dr Levi-Montalcini's obituary; she was 101.
I never received it. Let the seller know, they refunded all but $17.

Chalk that up to live and learn- probably pinched on the sending end, given her death and people wanting to read about her causing what few existing books available to skyrocket in prices like you see here.

The prices you see are crazy high. Where is a supply and demand publisher?! GIVE US HIGH QUALITY STORIES OF HUMAN GREATNESS! Kind of like dying of thirst in the desert, intellectually dying to read about this great woman and her colleagues!

The publisher needs to go to a second printing to make this book widely available as it is a story which deserves a large audience!
I finally got a used copy to read, at a bargain price of around $80.
You are right- the price offends, and this brilliant woman's thoughts, insights and her story needs to be available to millions.
That Rita-Levi-Montalcini's story happened DURING World War II, and she was Jewish, and she explains what she and family and friends endured during this time is equally enlightening as a primary history source. Gutwrenching to me, she describes being in Florence as the Nazis bombed the ancient bridges...
Get it, read it is all I can say. The scientific story is impressive as well of course. Some ethical intelligent publisher somewhere should republish this! Maybe Jeff Bezos would be willing to underwrite the publishing?

In the second half of the 1960s and the early 1970s, the Ethiopian student movement emerged from rather innocuous beginnings to become the major opposition force against the imperial regime in Ethiopia, contributing perhaps more than any other factor to the eruption of the 1974 revolution, a revolution that brought about not only the end of the long reign of Emperor Haile Sellassie, but also a dynasty of exceptional longevity. The student movement would be of fundamental importance in the shaping of the future Ethiopia, instrumental in both its political and social development. Bahru Zewde, himself one of the students involved in the uprising, draws on interviews with former student leaders and activists, as well as documentary sources, to describe the steady radicalisation of the movement, characterised particularly after 1965 by annual demonstrations against the regime and culminating in the ascendancy of Marxism-Leninism by the early 1970s. Almost in tandem with the global student movement, the year 1969 marked the climax of student opposition to the imperial regime, both at home and abroad. It was also in that year that students broached what came to be famously known as the "national question", ultimately resulting in the adoption in 1971of the Leninist/Stalinist principle of self-determination up to and including secession. On the eve of the revolution, the student movement abroad split into two rival factions; a split that was ultimately to lead to the liquidation of both and the consolidation of military dictatorship as well as the emergence of the ethno-nationalist agenda as the only viable alternative to the military regime. Bahru Zewde is Emeritus Professor of History at Addis Ababa University and Vice President of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. He has authored many books and articles, notably A History of Modern Ethiopia, 1855-1974 and Pioneers of Change in Ethiopia: The Reformist Intellectuals of the Early Twentieth Century. thoughtful and well written

This book is a must read to understand the struggle for change in Ethiopia that was part of the global wave of the 1960s and 70s carried over by young people in virtually all regions of the world. Bahru Zewde writes history with such prose and skill, it reads like a novel - a page turner. It will, no doubt be especially enjoyable by those who were young (and active) during the 1960s, leading up overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie and the subsequent political turmoil of the Derg regime.

About the Author
The Reverend Wilson D. Miscamble, C.S.C., joined the permanent faculty at Notre Dame in 1988. A native of Australia, he was educated at the University of Queensland, from which he graduated in 1973 and obtained a master's degree three years later. In 1976, he came to Notre Dame to pursue graduate studies in history. He received his doctoral degree in 1980. He then served for two years as North American analyst in the Office of National Assessments, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Canberra, Australia. In August 1982, he returned to Notre Dame and entered the priestly formation program of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was ordained a priest on April 9, 1988. His primary research interest is American foreign policy since World War II. He is the author of George F. Kennan and the Making of American Foreign Policy, 1947-1950 and Keeping the Faith, Making a Difference. He has edited American Political History: Essays on the State of the Discipline and Go Forth and Do Good: Memorable Notre Dame Commencement Addresses. His most recent book, From Roosevelt to Truman: Potsdam, Hiroshima, and the Cold War, was published in 2007 and received the Harry S. Truman Book Award in 2008.

Not A Blast

This is a well-researched book on this controversial topic. I found the author to be unbiased and interesting in his views. Having read extensively on the war in the Pacific, I've never doubted the rationale to drop the bomb, especially if one considers the prevailing zeitgeist in the US. We seem to engage in revisionist history too often, usually led by people with no understanding of history, sociology, psychology, or even geography, who focus on applying contemporary mores and values to periods in which they did not and could not exist.

I doubt this is a "spoiler," but I'll warn you not to read on just in case you want to read the book to find out how the author feels. I came away with the understanding that the use of the atomic bomb was thought to be in the best interests of our nation at the time (nations operate solely in their best interests if they are to survive) and the author concurs. The Cold War as an aftermath is discussed, and from then to now no one has used atomic weapons again. If anyone does, no doubt it will be by terrorists trying to destroy everyone who doesn't agree with them.

If you are truly interested in the history, this is a good book, though the writing isn't going to win a Pulitzer Prize. If you already have your mind made up that we shouldn't have used the bomb, then I doubt you'll be open to these facts and arguments.

A look at the facts that were known at the time, not in hindsight

In 1945 Japan was arming its civilian population with spears and old rifles to oppose the American force when it came but when it came, it was not from the beaches but from the sky: Unimaginable, Irresistible, mushroom shaped. Nearly 70 years after the event, some people still debate whether or not the United States needed to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Stepping into this is Wilson Miscamble.

Today there are lots of such debates using information now available on both sides of the divide but in 1945 there was much less known of the Japanese plans and much more doubt about the future and that is what Miscamble brings to the party. His work, although it does have a bit towards the end on the workings of the Japanese government that was unknown to Truman-and certainly would have encourage his use of nuclear weapons had he known- focuses predominantly on what the Americans knew and thought. What was going through their meetings and councils and what were the facts they had before them when the used the Atomic bombs.

The biggest elements were a fear of the Soviets-having seen how they were failing to keep their Yalta commitments on freedoms in areas they conquered, a soviet intervention in the east, something no one desperately needed, might well lead to a soviet expansion there and the fact that no one saw the atomic bombs as the game changers they were. They saw them as another weapon to be used along side conventional weapons, naval blockade and land forces. Anything that would stop the need for troops to land on Japan proper and suffer even more casualties like had been seen in places like Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

In the end Miscamble has written a book that gets a bit wordy at times, but is very needed for that decades old debate on the right or wrong of Hiroshima as he focuses not so much on what when know now, but what was known *then* and how that influenced the American government to make the choice it did.

A Clear View Of the End of WW II

This is a great book and an important one in these days of PC, where whole generations have disassociated themselves from the reality of WWII and what was needed to win. Extremely important to realize that in spite of the propaganda it is close to a certainty that FDR would have dropped the bomb on Germany had we had it in time, which puts the lie to the idea put forward by nay sayers that it was a racist action against the Japanese - which is only one of many misconceptions about the war. Recommended to everyone who is PC, and those who aren't who wish to clarify their arguments. Like Ike, it gets five stars.

Excellent Math Text

I bought this text for my daughter who homeschools and is in 7th grade. I know it will be a little challenging but she would like to take Algebra as an 8th grader. I have looked at many companies and haven't found a single one that does such a great job of setting the lessons up and putting everything into units. At the beginning of a lesson, there are 3-5 examples of the new information. Then there are 7-15 guided practice problems (we do these together). Then what I think is genius, the remaining 20-40 problems apply what concept was taught to many aspects of everyday life (charts, graphs, word problems, etc.). This helps real-world application take place which for me, as a kid, never happened with texts like Saxon. After the main lesson, there are 5-15 review problems of previous concepts so the skills aren't lost. Then if desired, the student can do the standardized problems if they are preparing for the state tests. Mixed throughout the units are mid-ch quizes and a test after each chapter. They are also mini lessons you can do that explain how to use a graphing calculator and other concepts. I am so glad I found such a great company and text for my daughter. We also looked at the Course 2 and 3 texts by Holt McDougal and they have the same setup. The only thing was then my daughter wouldn't be able to take Algebra in 8th grade. The Course 2 is for 7th graders and is a good text if your child is average (not lower or excellent). The course 3 is for 8th graders who will take Pre-Algebra as a 9th grader. The same concepts as in both the Course 3 and Pre-Algebra books with the exception of a little more trig and geometry in the end of the Pre-Algebra book. If we don't get to the end of the book this year, that won't be a big deal because rarely do regular school finish a text in 1 year. She will always cover geometry and trig later.

About the Author
Pir Netanel (Mu’in ad-din) Miles-Y�pez, D.D., is the current head of the Inayati-Maimuni lineage of Sufism, co-founded with Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, fusing the Sufi and Hasidic principles of spirituality and practice espoused by Rabbi Avraham Maimuni in 13th-century Egypt with the teachings of the Ba’al Shem Tov and Hazrat Inayat Khan. He studied History of Religions at Michigan State University and Contemplative Religion at the Naropa Institute before pursuing traditional studies in both Sufism and Hasidism with Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and various other teachers, including Pir Puran Bair and Thomas Atum O’Kane. He likewise counts Father Thomas Keating as an important influence. He has been deeply involved in ecumenical dialogue and is considered a leading thinker in the InterSpiritual and New Monasticism movements. He is the co-author of two critically acclaimed commentaries on Hasidic spirituality, A Heart Afire: Stories and Teachings of the Early Hasidic Masters (2009) and A Hidden Light: Stories and Teachings of Early HaBaD and Bratzlav Hasidism (2011), the editor of The Common Heart: An Experience of Interreligious Dialogue (2006) and Living Fully, Dying Well: Reflecting on Death to Find Your Life’s Meaning (2009). He currently teaches Contemplative Islam and Sufism in the Department of Religious Studies at Naropa University.

Loved this books and the strategies mentioned.

I'm currently also gathering Twitter followers and the number of my new daily followers didn't match my expectation, so I was really interested what the book had to say. I was a bit sceptical about the 1 million followers but when I started reading the book I got convinced that the author has real experience in the topic and knows what he is talking about.
