Sarah Crockett has worked in Activities Provision in residential care for over 10 years.�She currently works in a County Council Day Centre as a Day Care Officer. In 2008 she reached the finals of Barchester Health Care's Activity Provider of the Year Award, and in 2010 she won the National Association of Providers of Activities for Older People (NAPA) Activity Award. In 2009 she qualified as one of the first dementia link workers (DLW) in the UK. She lives in Gloucestershire, UK.

About the Author

L. Scott Mills is a Professor in the Wildlife Biology Program at The University of Montana. He was a 2009 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, has received multiple NSF Awards, served on the Board of Governors for the North American Section of the Society for Conservation Biology, and has testified to Congress about the role of ethics in wildlife population biology research. Mills was an invited contributor to the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report (IPCC) report, and to the Western Governors’ Association Climate Change Working Group. His research and teaching integrates field studies with population models and genetic analyses to understand effects of human perturbations on wildlife populations. Mills' research on wildlife around the world – from snowshoe hares to marmots, mice to coyotes, bighorn sheep to snow leopards and tigers - has been covered in media outlets including Newsweek, National Geographic, The New York Times, Discovery Channel Canada, Science News, National Public Radio, Nature, Science, and The Nature of Things with David Suzuki.

Best book on the history of Blue and White China

I read this book, cover to cover back in the mid 1980's. I even made notes, which I can no longer find.

In doing research on the history of porcelain, this book tops my list for Blue& White. For years I have not been able to track it down, but now I see it advertised in Victoria Magazine ! I feel as though I have found an old friend...who has now become famous...Voila!

This is a beautiful book, and the cover alone draws in us blue-and-white fanatics of the world. It is an important book as well, in the world of learning about, collecting, and appreciating our favorite china. We need all the help we can get (!), and this book should be the first one we buy to start a library on the subject.
I would recommend it to anyone whose dreams -- and shelves -- are filled with blue and white.

I read the comic version of this as a kid and it was much better than the book

This book takes FOREVER to get through - there is way too much backstory and way too many rabbit-trails. The movie got it right - focus on David's relationship with the gangs, specifically Nicky Cruz. Also there is inappropriate content for kids under 16. I read the comic version of this as a kid and it was much better than the book!

One of the best books I have ever read

I grew up in Wilmington and my nephews went to Archmere Academy, his former home. My parents knew some of the Raskob children, being of the same generation, and I heard a bit about the family. This book about a remarkable man who was Pierre du Pont's behind the scenes business partner and confidant from 1900 when Raskob was hired as his secretary and book-keeper until Raskob's death 50 years later, was extensively researched over a period of 8 years and it shows. This is a MUST READ for anyone in the business world as he was the financial genius responsible for much of the Du Pont company's growth including the take over of General Motors, and other companies. He created "leveraged buyouts" to do this and GMAC so that the average man could buy the more expensive GM cars instead of Ford's. During the depression, he built the Empire State Building, and championed it over decades even when it was known as the "Empty State Building". He married early, sired 13 children over 15 years, and when they were older, took them on long European trips with itineraries laid out beforehand....a different city each day, traveling in two cars with his valet with him all the time. He quietly created a family foundation giving millions to Catholic charities; this remains to this day, headquartered in Raskob's brother's home in Wilmington. Recently, when a 93 year old du Pont family member was asked a question about the company, he referred to this book for the answer. You can't get a better recommendation than that!

The most significant leadership book published this year, David Farber's "Everybody Ought to Be Rich: The Life and Times of John J. Raskob, Capitalist," is about an executive who was responsible for much of what is right, and wrong, with the U.S. auto industry today (and the leadership of giant businesses, in general). Six decades after his death, Raskob remains one of the most influential--and colorful--characters in the annals of corporate America. He served as chief financial officer of both General Motors Company and DuPont in an era before the title existed. In the early 1920s, Raskob laid the foundations that enabled both companies to rise from relative obscurity (in GM's case, from near bankruptcy) to become, respectively, the world's first- and third-largest corporations by the time he retired from their boards in the late 1940s.

John Jakob Raskob (1879-1950) knew next to nothing about making cars (or chemicals) and wasn't particularly interested in industrial manufacturing, engineering, or organizational management. Instead, his many and lasting contributions to corporate leadership were entirely financial. Raskob was the first executive to practice what came to be called management by the numbers. At DuPont, in the 1910s, he created--with a big assist from prot�g� Donaldson Brown--most of the accounting and budgeting procedures and metrics that are still standard in American companies.

Raskob's most significant creations (and for him, the most fun) were the arcane financial instruments that allowed DuPont to acquire its major competitors (and control of General Motors) using other people's money. He was the Adam of corporate acquisitions and financial restructuring. His creative output included the invention of holding companies and paper instruments that reduced the risk, liability, and taxes of his boss, Pierre S. du Pont, chairman and, for a time, chief executive of both GM and DuPont. Raskob's financial prestidigitation helped make du Pont a multibillionaire in today's dollars--and, through stock speculation, insider trading (he shorted GM stock), and prodigious tax avoidance, a billionaire in his own right.

Farber, professor of history at Temple University and author of "Sloan Rules: Alfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General Motors" (University of Chicago Press, 2002), documents how the largely self-educated Raskob quickly rose from the ranks of the petite bourgeoisie (his father was a cigar maker). He became the first Roman Catholic accepted as a peer in U.S. boardrooms, the progressive head of the nation's anti-Prohibitionists, chairman of the Democratic National Committee at the time of Franklin Roosevelt's first presidential nomination, and, in a spectacular volte-face, a leader of the right-wing American Liberty League, which opposed the New Deal and the United States' entry into World War II. He was Pope Pius XII's main fund-raiser in the United States, a lifelong pal of New York's powerful Cardinal Spellman, a Knight of Malta, and, along with his 12 children, a regular communicant. At the same time, he was a playboy nonpareil (with a weakness for showgirls, booze, and gambling) and a willing abettor of his wife's cohabitation with a man many years her junior. John Raskob seems also to have helped conceal Pierre du Pont's evident homosexuality. Few bios of CFOs have such racy subplots.

Still, Farber keeps his main focus on Raskob's business practices, documenting how he arranged bailouts for GM (the company has a history of that sort of thing), invented the consumer credit industry (GMAC was his brainchild), designed the first executive stock option plan, and was the first to advocate wide-scale employee stock ownership. In early 1929, Raskob also proposed what might have become a national social security system invested entirely in the stock market (but his timing was embarrassingly bad).

Never able to sit still for the quotidian details of management, Raskob preferred to pull strings behind the scenes. He plumped for the appointment of the more temperamentally suited Alfred Sloan to succeed Pierre du Pont at GM's helm when, for the asking, he could have had the top job himself. In Sloan's classic "My Years with General Motors" (Doubleday, 1964), he credits Raskob for introducing the system of financial controls that made it possible for GM to become the world's largest corporation, invidiously contrasting Raskob to Henry Ford, who was dismissed by Sloan as a genius mechanic who couldn't manage a giant company. Unlike Ford's company, Sloan sniffed, "General Motors is in the business of making money, not cars."

This book reconfigures the way we understand the relationship between media and "reality"

In response to the single scathing review of this book previously posted on Amazon, I feel the need to say that this is one of the most important and insightful books about documentary that has been written thus far. Bill Nichols, one of the preeminent documentary scholars, theorizes the complex relationship between media and "reality" without ever reducing it to any simple conclusion. Sure, it is a "postmodern" book but we live in a postmodern world in which "facts" and "truths" are constantly put into question. If you have ever wondered if an image you are looking at is photoshopped then you, too, live in a postmodern world. Nichols writes beautifully and clearly about the difficulty of navigating through the contemporary world when the categories of "true" and "false" no longer hold absolute power. Nichols' discussion of the Rodney King tape is one that I teach all the time, and it helps my students think about how they come to "believe in" images or not. If you are interested in documentary or in questions of how we determine what is "true," this is the best book on the (virtual) shelf.

Typical postmodern babble by one of its great practitioners.

This foul little book pretends to explain how fact and fiction can blur in the media. Sounds reasonable, but don't let that fool you; it's one of the most dense, awful examples of "postmodernspeak" I've ever read. Nichols seems to be improvising, writing beauties like "The indexical bond of point-for-point correspondence between photograph and source anchors an iconic sense of typicality . . . and a symbolic layer of connotation and ideology." No self-respecting writer--or writer who respects his readers--would spare that sentence the revision it begs for. Chances are you're a film student if you own a copy. DO NOT let it make you feel stupid. Nichols hides his ideas in such Byzantine prose so you can't identify them. If you can't identify his ideas, then you can't critique them. And that's just how he wants it. The price they're asking for this book is hilarious. Maybe I'll get my money's worth when I throw it at my professor.

The best, with minor misgivings

I fell in love with the first edition of this book and intended to use it for a class I plan to teach next year. Then the second edition came out. I particularly love the approach through actual text, making the source come alive so quickly for beginning students. The second edition is, in many ways, an improvement. There is much more in the way of grammatical detail and more exercises, but it "feels" like a lot of this can go way over the heads of teenagers or adults who are not in a college setting. Of course, this IS a college text. My second misgiving is that I have come across several minor typos in the text--for example, one of the graphic illustrations of a vav conversive pi'el verb leaves the dagesh out. Anyone using the book must be alert ahead of time to minor errors in an otherwise fine text--lets hope these are weeded out in later editions.

I am refreshing my Biblical Hebrew and found this to be an excellent text for that purpose. Well-printed and thorough.

Good idea but...

The book Biblical Hebrew Text And Workbook 2nd Edition attempts to bring the students immediately into contact with the written text. While this may not be such a bad idea, the problem is that there are too many rules of grammar that have to be dealt with (and are not dealt with very well in my opinion) that it is confusing to the beginner. I bought this book after a first year seminary Biblical Hebrew class and while I am the first to admit that I am no expert in Biblical Hebrew, I cannot say that I would recommend this book to anyone. Anyone wanting to learn the language will be much better served by the Living Biblical Hebrew series by Randall Buth.
