About the Author
Michael Williams (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) is Johanna K. and Martin J. Wyngaarden Senior Professor of Old Testament Studies at Calvin Theological Seminary and a member of the NIV Committee on Bible Translation. He is the author of Deception in Genesis, The Prophet and His Message, Basics of Ancient Ugaritic, The Biblical Hebrew Companion for Bible Software Users, and How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, and editor and contributor of Mishneh Todah. His passion is to equip students with knowledge of the Old Testament and its languages so that they may grow in their comprehension and appreciation of redemptive history and be adequately prepared to promote and defend the faith through word and action. Michael resides in Grand Rapids, MI, with his wife, Dawn.

Ugaritic Introduction

Students of Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic can find insight and help into the meaning of words, syntax, and historical background by turning to other Semitic languages of the same period such as Ugaritic. Michael Williams has now released one of the most simple, clear, and concise primers to ancient Ugaritic available.
This book is indeed concise at about 100 pages proper for the text without including the lexicon and other helps in the background. Williams begins with the background of Ugaritic showing its similarities to Hebrew as well as its important background material for understanding certain OT references. He then moves progressively through the alphabet, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and so on.
Williams' book is strongest in its simple presentation of the grammar of Ugaritic showings its usefulness for biblical studies. His presentation is very clear compared to many other resources available on Ugaritic that are obscure and difficult to understand. This book is also concise which is both positive and negative. For the student who wants some basic familiarity with the language, this resource is sufficient but it won't take a student interested in advanced studies very far.
Another negative is that Williams uses transliteration throughout the entire book rather than requiring the student to study and read the ancient cuneiform texts. This is unfortunate in my opinion though it may make the presentation a bit easier. Another negative of this book is the retail price ($49.99), which is far too high for a 130 page paperback book. This book should be priced around $19.99 or $29.99 rather than its high price.
However, all things considered, this is a lucid and helpful introduction to ancient Ugaritic and should aid students of Hebrew and Aramaic as they continue their studies of the Old Testament.

Delivers

This book is designed primarily for the student with a background in Hebrew, but it is simple enough for the beginner with zero knowledge of any Semitic language.
It is by far not an exhaustive treatment of Ugaritic which the author makes abundantly clear. However, it does provide a rather nice set of references for further study throughout the book should one choose to delve deeper into the language. Teaching only the generally accepted rules of Ugaritic grammar etc. And alerting the reader to questionable rules of grammar at times, this book gives the student a balanced introduction emphasizing that there is still much academic debate and disagreement on features of Ugaritic.
The only criticism I could have is that there is not as many citations and emphases in Ugaritic script throughout the book as I would like to see. It would be nice to have a short Ugarit passage at the end of each chapter for the reader to gloss. This would help the reader assess his/her cumulative profiency or at least the chapter-specific material previously covered.
In the end, this book is excellent and will provide a working knowledge of the language in a simple, none-intimidating manner. I recommend it especially for Hebrew students to augment their studies in morphology and scripture, but also for anyone else thwisps interested in the ancient language(s) of Canaan.

Well Written

Unlike other books written on the Ugarit language, this book begins as any basic grammar would begin with the alphabet and working through the nouns and verbs as well as grammar in an orderly fashion. Many of the Ugaritic grammars that I have seen made far too many assumptions about the readers' knowledge of Semitic language in general. I would recommend this book as an excellent primer and let the other books flesh out the rest.
